Friends of a married police officer who is accused of brutally murdering one of his lovers when she threatened to expose his affair have claimed he is a “true gent”.
Family and friends of PC Timothy Brehmer, who allegedly “angrily” strangled nurse Claire Parry to death, praised the man accused of murder in court today.
They described him as a “committed family man” and they still believe he is a “man of integrity”.
Others said the 41-year-old, who had affairs with at least two others, was “calm” and claimed they had “never seen him lose his temper”.
One close friend even said “I would trust him with my life”.
The court has heard his wife of 14 years, detective Martha Brehmer, has not spoken to him since he killed Mrs Parry, who he had an affair with for 10 years.
However, Brehmer’s step-father today told jurors he has the ‘resolute support’ of his family.
Brehmer, a Dorset Police officer of 17 years, is accused of murdering mother of two Mrs Parry, also 41, in his Citroen C1 in a pub car park in West Parley, Dorset, on May 9 this year.
Salisbury Crown Court, Wilts, has heard during his two-week trial that ‘in a rage’ Brehmer suffocated Mrs Parry in the crook of his arm minutes after she used his phone to text his wife ‘I’m cheating on you’.
Brehmer denies murder but admits manslaughter, claiming he was trying to push Mrs Parry out of the car in a struggle and ‘fell on top of her by accident more than anything’.
Today, as the last evidence in the trial, barrister Jane Rowley read character witness statements from Brehmer’s friends and family.
Roger Chivers, who married Brehmer’s mother – Rosalyn Chivers – when the defendant was 26, said he avoids violence.
Mr Chivers, from Romsey, Hants, said: “He’s a fundamentally decent person, he has many friends and acquaintances.
“Like all of us he has made errors of judgement, however the one thing I do know is that he does not like confrontation or violence and will go to great lengths to avoid it.
“Despite recent events I know he is a committed family man and is devastated by the position others find themselves in.
“He is determined to provide an honest account of his actions and take full responsibility for them.
“Tim retains the resolute support of his family and friends and others aware of his true character.”
Thomas Penny, who has known Brehmer for eight years, claimed he is a ‘true gent’.
Mr Penny said: “He’s my closest friend and I would trust him with my life… He is a gentle giant and is always there when you need him.
“Timothy Brehmer is a true gent and there are not many of them left in the world.”
